Ive seen this tried and the pigeons just dont go under the cage wood pigeons are clever little sods some times youd be better off with an air rifle and a bird table now that does work

Kill-germ sell pigeon traps, they've been around for donkeys years but I think you would only catch ferals in them and not woodies, so its one for you townies, and the enviromental health dept would probably pat you on the back for it for a change

I don't fancy eating the woodies in our garden due to the amount of stuff they seem to scavenge from peoples gardens. Same goes for tree rats. They tend to scoff fat balls, old bread, rubbish and all sorts of seeds with treatments etc.

I would if I had to but I'd prefer getting some from more wild places.

Cab, could you not track done someone who shoots them over farmland and arrange to collect some?

Maybe. But I don't see that as any better guarantee of safety than eating a suburban pigeon.

I was thinking more along the lines of ready killed birds. The question of what is safe and what I may think is safe would make a good topic.

Both good points.

I dunno. Might be someone local who has an excess of pigeons. It'd be nice.

A couple of mates of mine were threatened by some lampers last year, and in a roundabout way it was my fault. So there's got to be some excess vermin meat somewhere local

Any reason why it shouldn't be? I'd pull their necks so no offensive weapons and they're vermin with no close season. I think with landowners say-so it'd be fine. If it worked that is!

I have had my best shooting in my back garden, several pigeons, a pheasant and almost had a duck last year. I tend to leave the collared doves though as they seem a bit scrawny and also seem to be good decoys- the wood pigeons watch them take the seed I've left out and then come down when they think it's safe. Unbeknownst to them I'm leaning out of my bedroom window doing my best Lee Harvey Oswald impression...
