Thanks for that gavin - def not a flatworm! Must just be really big earth worms. I guess thats a good thing on my awful clay soil.

If they got eyes they aint earthworms! I wouldn't use them for fishing bait either!

Here's a photo I've just taken of a couple of our resident slow worms. The one on the left is about 10 inches long. They are very useful in the garden and totally harmless.

Damn. I wasn't even close

I spent a happy afternoon digging into solid clay in Chilwell recently.

Shame the soil on the plot is so clayish. A pal of mine had one down in Beeston Rylands, had fantastic soil, as you'd expect on a flood plain.

I'm trying to get the lass in question to take on the garden herself. She's had her lessons now; next time I stand there and crack the whip
