Hi
I have a PC running on broadband it works well.
I am going to locate to another area, I asked BT if broadband was available in that area, they check and because it was far from the exchange, they said it wasn't much quicker than dial up.
Therefore is best to just go on dail up or get broadband.
1. If I go on dail up is it cost effective (I will be using it for 4 days 9am, till about 6pm)
2. Also if I go on dail-up do I need to change any parts in my PC.
Many thanks

For dial up, you'll need a dial up modem. This could be in your PC, or it could be an external box. If it's a desk top and you're missing one, let me know. I have one you can have for the price of posting. Fitting it is easy enough.

4 days a week 9 through to 6, constantly? .... you need broadband.
Apart from the cost questions of dialup, you'll be hogging the phone line.

dial up costs - remember that you might need a second line to use the phone at the same time as the internet (dont think about voip on dial up), BB will be faster - I think 512mb is the slowest on offer?
And its instantly available - no waiting for the dialing up, authentication, etc.
If you are so far from the exchange that broadband connection speed might be affected then so could a modem dial up speed. Also the suppliers are often very inconsistent in what they say you can get so while one supplier will tell you that you will not get any more than 512k another will promise 2meg. Also I have never heard of broadband slowing to modem speeds and still working.
So all in all I would go with broadband.

We've just got wireless broadband to the nearest town, 15km away. It may be called WiMax, but I couldn't understand the Wikipedia page. Works a treat. Maybe it's worth seeing if there's an operator offering it.
I think you can only wait and see what broadband is like when you get there. For a long time BT maintained that we could get broadband because what they had tried to supply us was technically broadband - though it didn't work very well (not as as well as the dial up...) Like you our problem is distance from the exchange. However one of our close neighbours - who got in first - does have a good connection - he has effectively hogged the line.

Well after three evenings trying to install it and an hours worth of telephone support we are finally using mobile broadband from 3. Certainly seems a lot quicker than dial up... fingers crossed it continues to work!
