I'm new to the site just wondered if anyone can help.I rescued 6 Black Rocks a year ago-don't know their age but they have been laying quite well. They are in good condition but over last 2 days have noticed some horrid poo very wet and the comb on one hen is going ?dark ?black onthe top edge.I feed steamed veg mixed with mash twice daily and mixed corn at night.
If anyone has any ideas on what this is I'd be grateful. [/b]

When you say black on top of the comb has the hen been pecked a fair bit? The blood does dry black.

Now lets talk poo. What colour is it and is it very smelly? If it looks like normal but just very runny I've found ours can do this if they drink too much, but it only lasts a little while. So if the hen is still bad in the morning it would be worth isolating the bird or taking her to a vet unless someone else can help.

Have you ever wormed the hens and do they free range at all? The more they free range the more likely they are to pick up worm parasites which can be treated with a wormer such as Flubenvet.

No she hasn't been pecked the actual colour of comb at top is dark-I thought poor circulation. They free range and they are wormed.
Poo is very runny but not too offensive-well hens poo is always pretty offensive but I'm sure you know what I mean.

If you think she is well enough not to go to a vet (some vets wouldn't know that much about hens anyway) you can try giving her some live yoghurt. She should like it and it may help to settle her insides. If the others are fine then she may have just eaten something funny.

Is her crop ok? First think in the morning is it empty. If not she could have eaten too much long grass that could cause her crop to bind up.

Chicken poo is different to each poo. Is that the only ones she is doing or are there any more upright solid ones too.

Her poo continues to be loose but some of it is sticking to the vent area as if she cannot push it right out. She's bright and eating but the vet who is a willing person knows little about chicks and usually ends up giving a steroid injection. By the way the poo is grey in colour.

If she's looking healthy I'd tend to leave her and keep an eye on her. Our hens are very fluffy down below and I have trimmed one of them a bit as she can get a little messy. I use warm water and kitchen towel to clean her a little.

You could also try the Country Smallholding bulleting board:
www.countrysmallholding.com/content/bulletinBoard/

or writing in to their vet in the Vets Forum page.

Let us know how you get on and all the best.
