Hows that, has not got the extra spacing yet, and I have kept the author, seems to lose a bit of personality without that IMHO.

But I will of course go with the views here.

The only problem is that sometimes it looks like we're the only ones here

I prefer no borders. What about spacing things out further - there's no need to be afraid of whitespace (as I'm always being told!), or having less in that forum sidebar?

Don't know the technical term for this, but it might look neater if the green of the logo box lined up on the bottom left corner with the light brown article box underneath it. The square box at top left, featuring the Christmas quiz would have to b a shade smaller.
Does that make sense? I know what I mean.

I'm inclined to agree, hence the suggestion about the fora topics. You could use a bit less text in each bit on the front page, and have biger gaps. Maybe try it on the mirror, so that we can have a look?

Could you replace the icon with a text 'join in'?

A good idea, but the code does not allow that, not sure it is worth hacking the code for.

Would certainly need doing if we stick with the current look, it cannot bets be done now though, it will be best done when I make the so called "dynamic" page width changes.

I am not getting much of a feel on the consensus on page look so far

I'm just trying to think of things which would have helped me before I became the IT colossus who stands before you. Could you put it at the bottom of the box?
