I am investigating a possible supplier of beef

this website suggests they graze/rear their cows on an SSS1 site.

My googling unfortunately doesn't produce any meaningful information about what this means, just that is might be something to do with conservation and biodiversity but no specific definition

Does anyone know?

Well, if it's traditional meadow land, then rearing cattle on it might help to maintain its desirable qualities.

Probably because cattle are ideal at keeping the fields how they used to be. If they are left then other plants may grow (such as brambles and tough grasses) that will compete with some of the rarer plants.

Many threatened habitats have evolved around sheep and cattle grazing etc... So, using a few cattle can be good.

It may be simply that cattle have been reared on that land for a very long time, therefore contributing to the individual character of the site. Things that are forbidden on an SSI include drainage work, felling, variation of grazing, spraying of pesticides, and are specific to individual sites, though drawn from a standard list.

in suffolk you can contact the Suffolk Wildlife Trust who can direct you to grazing of that sort. i know that the mere near framlingham castle is grazed on that basis...i have thought idly about it but worry about the fencing etc so never got down to it the animals are used as part of the land management process as are the exmoor ponies on various other sites.
