Two hours, would they be worth the fuel? Yet another reason for a wood stove.

Aaarg! Do you think I ought to check on mine? oops!

My 5 year old has been doing 'farming' at school this week & has apparantly told the class that Mummy farms snails today. I'm anticipating an interesting reaction at the school gates in the morning once that news gets around

Just say you're being European, or offer some around.

Yuk! Sorry Treac but that is disgusting!

Even us "frenchies" wouldn't eat something as revolting as that!

Well, some might but not me.

Well done all the same for trying something new .... I hope Bugs tried them also???

I will remain veggie for the time being

They didn't tast of much, but not unpleasant. It was just the slime. I will have to look at desliming and try cooking them for much longer than the total 20 mins I gave.

I am SOOOOOOO proud of myself, after just eating mine.

The intention was to have them in a mushroom risotto but at the vital point realised we had no mushrooms so I had them in a cabbage risotto instead which probably didn't do them justice!!

B/friend prepared them for me as he's the cook in this house. He boiled them in veggie stock for 4 minutes before chopping them up in the rice dish.

I had the first few mouthfulls bravely but then I caught a close up glimpse of what I was eating & it looked so inutterably foul that I took my glasses off so I couldn't see & got him to feed me the rest!!

They didn't really taste of anything particular (cabbage?!!!), but had a certainly squish when you bit them which was most odd. I think it was the thought and the look of them I disliked rather than anything else, and there's no logic behind that.

Saying that, now I've done it once I know that I can do it again, & that was the point of the exercise.

Well done Andrea, I don't think I'll be following in your footsteps though

Yes, well done. I think I'll cook mine for a bit longer and chop up as well next time. It does mean there's something else I know I can eat if I need to, or give guests if we have any.

Interesting that both Treacodactyl and Andrea report that they had no very distictive taste. I cooked some last year and thought that they were very reminiscent of winkles... well, they would be wouldn't they! Thay had that metallic tang that you get from a winkle.

I am pleased to see others exploring the possibilities of wild food... and pest reduction!

When I boiled mine in water there was a distinctive but faint 'seafood' smell, but not much taste.

I thought that the main reason to eat snails was as a vehicle for garlic butter . I must say, I haven't been encouraged to try them by this thread - they sound just as I imagined they would be.

As big lumps, the flavour is slight; cut into something that complements the flavour they add a strong aroma and a pleasant flavour. Cutting them up into little bits in a risotto is, I think, the way forward. Or the French route of using garlic butter, if that's your taste. Don't like that myself, though.

Santa, for purging, I'd say that rocket isn't likely to work. Lettuce is a purgative, chicory would probably work, failing that you might get dandelion to do the trick, if they'll eat it (they can sometimes be devilishly fussy!).
