Hi, hope you can help me, my son and I have been shearing sheep for the first time and have really soft hands and arms and wondered if there is some way of extracting the waxy substance that makes your hands so soft to use as a hand cream. Anyone any ideas? Thanks

I've got a Roman method here somewhere (Dioscorides)- may take me until I get into work tomorrow to dig the book out, but basically if I recall correctly you just soaked the fleece in hot water to float the lanolin off, then you have to separate any dirt from the lanolin by repeated 'churning' in water with your hands to give a white hydrous lanolin paste. Otherwise, just spin in the grease and you'll get the benefit of the lanolin whilst you process your fibres.

In the River cottage sries, HFW used stale urine (ammonia ?) to remove the lanolin when making felt. Dave.

I think the thing with that, is that the wool was the desired end product rather than the lanolin. Not sure how you would remove the urine from the lanolin?

I used to enjoy shearing, your hands do go really soft - but the smell is another thing Sally-in-Wales seems to have the right idea for removing the lanolin from wool.
