Just found two specimens by a roadside. Normally, this salt loving, red staining tasty Agaricus is found near the sea, on clifftops or near sand dunes, but it seems to be increasingly common inland as more and more salt is dumped on our roads in winter and get sloshed about.
Worth keeping your eye out for it; it's very like a field mushroom in smell, but in shape a little more like a small horse mushroom. Distinctly Agaricus in appearance, with a white-ish (scaling darker in the sun) appearance; the other red staining Agaricus species you'll most often find such as A. langeii and A. sylvaticus are more woodland species, with browner, scaly caps.
As I say, keep your eye out for this one, in fact look out for all three. Phillips could make you think that they're uncommon, which I guess tey are, but they all have a habit of appearing at surprising times and in surprising habitats. |
