They are in at west bexington. Went there with the wife the other day and caught about 25. Some had to go back as were too small but some went as live bait and some went into my tummy to make it grow bigger

Nothing up here yet.

I spent the most incredible afternoon out on the fjord during our celebration of St. John's day on the 23rd, and had three tiny fish to show for it. No mackerel.

The fjord used to be full of any kind of fish, particularly our beloved cod, but now even the seagulls have almost stopped breeding due to lack of food. A nice fish is very rare. We blame large scale tourism fishing and the salmon industry which take all the "non-edible" fish out of the water. Once the basic stuff is gone there is no food for larger fish and other sea life.

We will of course eventually have the mackerel, as they are pelagic and come every summer. The wait is hard, though. I want a proper meal on the delicious fish!

The first mackerel is the best! They are already in shetland in small patches, so you should see some in the norwegian sector soon...

Yes! Yes! Yes!!!!

I stopped on my way home when passing a good place to fish. The day is so hot that I was reluctant even to get out. I had only a small trout rod in the car and fishing in the ocean with such light equipment is taking a real risk.

Then I hit a nice-sized mackerel on the head with my first cast. The next mackerel was huge.

After 10 min the heat got to me and I went home to cook dinner. Fish number one is well and truely eaten. Fish number two is in the fridge with salt and will be smoked tomorrow.

People, SUMMER IS GREAT!!!!!!

OH & Daughter went to Newhaven last night. Plenty of mackerel about, feeding close to the harbour wall - not many catching though. They came home with a couple of good sized fish each.

Badgerface, you'll have to let me into the good fishing spots down this way. Been here over two years now and still haven't made the effort to go fishing.

Newhaven harbour is good for mackerel, bass, pollock & gar's. It does get very busy during the day, since fishing from the breakwater was banned. We tend to go in the evenings when the tides are right (and the car park is free !). Just along the road from Newhaven, Seaford beach is nice, the waters very clear and the mackerel come right up to the shore.

Dungeness is good for flat fish, but I worry about their 'glow in the dark' status ! Hastings beach from the Old Town car park is good, and has the plus of being near the pub, for when the fishing is slow !!

I think you can still fish from Eastbourne pier, which used to be good. Birling Gap is another one of our favorites for Bass and also shrimps from the rock pools (and the pub is nice)

We mainly stick to Seaford, Newhaven & Birling Gap. The OH goes out on a friends boat from Newhaven occasionally, but I leave those trips for the boys.

Right, thats an incentive for me to sort out the fishing gear this weekend. I see an evening trip down to Hastings as a possibility for next week.

Well today was better, a mate of mine has a sailing boat on the Hamble, and after much nagging he took me out today We sailed out there and back it was great.

We fiished the Dolphin off of Calshot. Bream and Smoothhound, good sizes as well, but sadly No Mackas, but Drewsephine is coming up Sunday so we might have some then

Right, I'm after some advice. I'm likely to have some spare time over the next couple of weeks and fancied a bash at a bit of sea fishing. I will probably head down to Hastings and fish from the beach. In terms of tide, when is the best time to beach fish. Starting a couple of hours before high tide?

All depends on your beach. I know of one near Pricey that doesn't really matter when you fish as tide doesn't move up and down that much. Generally though i try to go for a couple of hours before high tide and a couple of hours after. If dusk/dawn coincides even better as most of the fishies tend to feel a bit safer when its darkish.

I checked the tide timetables for Hastings and its about 6.5m difference between low and high tides. High tide is at around 8pm on Sunday night, so Sunday or Monday evening could be the time to try then.
