Met a chap from this organisation at the Market in the middle of town at lunchtime:

Looks like a worthwhile bunch, they've started out in Norfolk but are looking to move the scheme out into Cambs, and ultimately I rekon it's local schemes like this who we as individuals can get involved with to make a difference. Lots of us making a small difference is at least a step in the right direction for making a BIG difference.

Would sign a pledge, Cab, but never give money.Curious how Bush is adamant that we in Europe are wrong to limit carbon emmissions.Could he be right. Perhaps we should go all out for alternative technology.

I have no doubt that we should both cut emissions AND develop better technology.

Yes Cab, I agree, we also need to stop car advertising and petrol advertising same as we did with cigarettes. Make cycling sexy,bring back local shops to cut travelling to outta town, cut back on haulage 'food miles', make allotments compulsory for the people who have the time to grow things.Million things out there that newspapers and governments could do to encourage clean air, yet what do we have. 'Top Gear' on televison , subsidised car plants and yet more roads that fill up as fast as they are built. I SIGN THE PLEDGE

I don't know about banning car ads, but I'd personally like to see some kind of encouragement for car ads to say something about the product; I thnk advertising that merely raises brand prominence is of dubious morality.

Largely, I'm against compulsion. Cutting food miles makes sense environmentally, making allotments compulsory isn't likely to. Besides, I'm not sharing MY allotment with someone just so everyone gets a bit

Heck, I was cheerful when I woke up.

The problems are more fundamental than that. We've built housing and businesses such that they can only work, people can only get from A to B by car. That isn't to say that many car trips aren't unnecessry, because quite a lot of them are, but we have to look at the whole picture. While we can keep extracting and producing hydrocarbons for a while yet, we have to accept that their price (environmentally and economically) will rise, and that has profound implications for every aspect of our society.

I was in administration in the motor trade quite a while ago, when the new type 'year' registration plates came out. We had a letter from Ford saying to encourage this as people would get caught up into competing with The Jones's..thus more trade.Which is what happened, and still happening. It's part and parcel of being seen to have done well in life. Buyers need shocking into not buying new vehicles, need shocking into using public transport. Advertising accidents help.Like you say more info, too, on bad effects on the environment. Isn't Cambridge somewhere up there as worst city for congestion.?

Cambridge has bad congestion because it's grown so much, and retained the same street plan it had back in the middle ages. It really is a victim of its own success. The main route into the city, the A14, is also the main route taking lorries to the coast and further into East Anglia, so it suffers terirbly when there's any kind of accident there.

So yeah, traffic here is pretty bad. But as I cycle nearly everywhere (we don't own a car) I don't really suffer too badly from the traffic.

Yes, I know a bit of Cambridge, when I lived at March would cycle in via Chatteris and Histon. Do Shire Hall history place, then a meal at The Baron of Beef ..they do a faggot (if you'll pardon the expression) soup to die for.Also did the half marathon several times from College something Green and back via Jeffrey Archers place.

Nice ride in from up that way through Histon. One of my regular cycle rides is up through Histon, back through Milton (or vice versa). Nice little ride, especially if you stop in the woods up in Histon or take a trip around the ponds in Milton.
