just made this one from a splendid bit of local yew,the knot/eye in it is oso nice,sadly its off to germany tomorrow to its new home,i know its gonna be well loved!

Is the colour difference where it changes from heart wood to sap wood? If so and you'd had a bigger bit you could have made a longbow.

Yew has a rd heart wood and a white sap wood. If I remember correctly it as just the heart wood that was used for longbows and they were laminated to give the flexibility. Could be wrong on that.

told you so. I've read far to much historical fiction in my time to not know that.

Lamination in bows is much more modern.

thanks for the comments folks.
the lighter stuff is the sapwood,and yes its the stuff of longbow fame,ive got a 6" x 7' yew stave air drying at the moment hopefully next year it will become a 'self' yew bow of about 50lb pull.
