We are having a rather bad time equipment wise in our house at the moment and I have probably moaned about it on other threads (sorry ) In the last three weeks alone oven, fridge and tumble drier (yes I know - but we hardly ever use it and we live in Wales for goodness sake - rains all winter!) has stopped working. I could go on and in fact people are starting to discuss poltergeists with me.. but anyway the point is that although I can probably get the oven and drier repaired - apparently no-one is repairing fridges because it is just not worth it!!! I thought they were impossibly expensive to dispose of and apparently the broken bit is quite likely to cost only 15 but no-one will even come and check so I could order it and get it replaced. I would like to say rant over and thanks for listening but I still feel angry about it (that and the fact that this house is costing me my wage packet every month to get things repaired)
I have joined freecycle - I am it's tenth member in my area I think we should be teaching this type of basic maintenance in schools oh dear I can feel another rant. I feel very frustrated tha I can't do it myself
I remember a man at work telling me that black and decker had an outlet near him and you could return your nonworking tools for a discount on new ones. When he queeried it,the manager said that their tools were only ever meant to last so many hours of use as they were only switched on for a few minutes at a time.
When we had a washing machine repair man round once,he said spare parts only had to be made for 5 years as that was the expected life of the machine!

Couldn't agree more - I learned latin at school which was interesting enough but now I'd appreciate a bit more knowledge of how a car works and is serviced as well as other white goods and general home maintenance. I suppose I could find out but a grounding back then would have gone a long way.
