Anybody got any idea on this? Somethings come up but the land's the other side of a public footpath, it could easily be rerouted within the land but how do you go about it?

Contact you local Footpaths officer at the council. There is a process which seems to be a bit like the planning process with notice being served, comments taken, suitability of the alternatives etc. The final result requires an amendment to the 'Definitive Map' which sets out all rights of way in the council's patch.

This might be handy as well and you probably need to get hold of the 1980 Act as well:

If you can't move it and do go for it, the BCTV has a book online about rights/responsibilities/management etc - https://handbooks.btcv.org.uk/handbooks/content/chapter/364

Yep, I've spoken to people in the council about footpaths before and they do have people who know the ins and outs. Is it just a footpath or bridle way or byeway?

How many people pursue issues with footpaths? in one rather militant phase I did go out occasionally with bolt cutters

But whatever you do whereever you go the problems always seem to be there, we encountered yesterday a broken style, an overgrown bridle path and general poor signposting. Not to mention having to walk several hundred yards on a busy main road

Basically, you don't. We wanted to on a house we delveloped - it was very straightforward, and the council had were all for it, as it was logical thing to do (I think it was just along a hedge to the gate, instead of making a new gate, so that the path didn't run right across someones drive) but the ramblers association blocked it on principle - without even coming to see it.

Don't get me started. However, would it be worth joining the RA, offering them something in return? Better styles, a few seats etc?

Any RA members out there who could shed some light?

I reckon a bit of plea bargaining might affect the outcome. We'll see, thanks for everybodies thoughts so far

Whilst I'm sure Tahir wants to re-route the public footpath for reasons which are entirely honourable, lovely and in everyone's best interests, I can see why the RA objects to footpaths being changed on principle. Most of them existed long before the landowners currently affected were born, form part of our heritage and IMHO should be preserved as they stand.

On the other hand many a rambler/walker etc in no way sticks to a foot path anyway. Some may take care and think that walking round the edge of a field better than going through the middle (but what about nesting birds?). Others just think that the field is theirs, especially with some of the recent legislation.

Like so many things, if common sense could prevail surely it's best for everyone?

Indeed, but how often does that happen, on either side?

Well, by the sounds of it never on the RA's but it does with some land owners. Of course some land owners can be right old ****s but then they can do that without moving the footpath and the police, council etc don't want to hear.
