I favour the swap- because then everyone gets a similar parcel to ooh and aah and compare notes over, which makes a nice warm happy pre thingymas topic for us all here.
For those who havent done one of these before the way it typically works is we arrange the numbers beforehand- say maybe 16 of us take part for this example. We agree not to go mad with what we send, its usually just a taster size, or a small item, then send 15 of them to the person who agrees to collate it (1 less than taking part as you don't want your own item back), with a preagreed amount of postage for your return parcel. They rerarrange all the parcels so that everyone gets everything, and posts yours back.
Any advances on this as a basic strategy- unless the majority prefer the secret santa idea?
No, that sounds like a good way of saying it Sally.
If there's interest in both a secret Santa and a swap, we can do both. I would guess that there will be broader interest in the Secret Santa, but those of us who feel like doing more heavy duty production can do the swap.

I'd like to do the secret Santa, but I don't see myself getting organised to do a large-scale swap.

I think these things will depend on the number of people involved
if we are talking 4 or 5 people a swap is fesible as the quanities aren't too great
if we are talking 20-25 people then the secret santa idea is better as making enough to make a swap worth while for that number of people becomes more difficult
for a secret santa I would happily make it secret if people wanted it to be
Bagpuss... Did you just volounteer to be the Santa?

I have been pondering this and if I can figure out how to get perl to send email I reckon a script to do secret santa would be relatively easy to knock up

Or you could get PM'd with details and then pull names out of a hat. I can even lend you a hat, if it helps.
Okay... We're getting a bit complicated here, we've got lots of options, and I'm going to turn it into a vote. That way we can see who wants to do what. Sort out some numbers.
