I am looking for some Squirel traps. Need a few so must be cheap. Any one know of supplier that does ones that work but wont break the bank? Or if you have some used ones to sell / loan?

Or a design to produce your own? The squirrels are something we should get on top of here and then maybe we'll get some hazel nuts next year.

I'd suggest a box baited with nuts and a Fenn trap inside. Either that or equip a teenager with an air rifle and offer a bounty per tail.

Fenn Mk4 in a tunnel baited with peanut butter under the plate. I have some new chinese copies that I can flog for �5.00 each plus the postage. Dpack can vouch for them, he bought some for rats a couple of years ago.

With the fens in a box /pipe I guess you only have a hole big enough for the target animal as we have cats & CHICKENS I would have to make them safe for them.

I have been taking a few with the air rifle but they now have suddenly gotten very gun shy & are around when I am not. Also we seem to have lots of young uns at the min.

With a fen where do they normally get caught? I fancy eating a few so would not want them spoiled by the trap.

Thanks, I'll buy some peanut butter and see what he thinks about setting them for squirrels, not sure if they've caught a rat yet. I imagine they leave a useable carcass? (Squirrels I mean, don't fancy eating a rat

)

I don't know how timid your ones are but I've caught a few in a live catch rat trap, that was set for a rat. The grey squirrels are very used to humans round here though so are not afraid of such traps.

Readers should be aware that the use of spring traps which are not specifically named in the Spring Trap Approval Orders, are not legal for use in the UK.

Contrary to popular belief, 'Fenn' traps are made by AA Fenn & Co, and are not a 'type' of trap but a make.

Beware of cheap fakes, especially those advertised as 'Fen' traps. They are of inferior quality, and are illegal to use in the UK.

If anyone needs Fenn traps, make sure they are genuine. John at Fourteenacre sells genuine Fenns direct from the manufacturer.

Found it in the explanatory notes of the The Spring Traps Approval Order 1995

I don't think that anyone who has examined a far eastern copy alongside the genuine article could ever consider them 'equivalents'.

The standards of materials and workmanship are very different.

The law (historically) is that each make of trap has to be named on the order - that's why the 'Springer' and the 'Solway' are listed in their own right.

Personally, I think that even rats deserve our respect. That's why I wouldn't skimp on cost when it comes to buying professional equipment.

I've known plenty of trappers who've bought cheap copies (some of whom didn't know that they were not getting the real thing), and have had them fall apart in no time, so if you've had three years service from yours then you've done well! I doubt the springs are up to much by now though.

What really gets my goat is sellers who claim that their copies are 'Fenns' or 'Fens'. It's akin to going to buy a ford, and finding that you are actually getting a Lada.

Traps of whatever make are no good if you're after goats. For goats you need a rifle.
