We've just been down to the River Wey at Guildford for a paddle, and got chatting to a guy who had six traps out for crayfish. So enamoured were we with the thought of free food that I've completed the relevant EA form to get a licence. But what I actually wanted to know was... how do you go about killing them? He mentioned something about driving a knife between their eyes..?

Just pop them in boiling water for 5 mins, no need to kill them first. If you really feel the need to, drive a knife in half way between the eyes and the tail, but in my opinion it takes longer for them to die that way.

Slower than the knife, just pop them in the water.

Are you sure ?
I've been looking on the website and it only says anything about a licence when trapping.
Seeing as how you weren't using a trap I don't see why you need one.
Also he couldn't have done anything as

Seeing as how you'd already caught them he'd be comitting an offence in telling you to let them go

Having said that apparently its illegal for you to keep them as well

I tried to fill in a form for a license, but it seemed like a lot of leg work - I work next to a river infested by them, but apparently you need to have landowners permission to trap them. But no idea how to find out whom the landowner is, except perhaps the council. Now how are they going to respond when I email them? I suspect I'll just get a flat no because it's not something they're used to dealing with.

If I did it from a kayak I'm not on a bank?

Ive just applied for a licence, its not that hard. I emailed the local fishing group and they advised me. I was always taught to put the crayfish in a freezer for a while as they are cold blooded and it makes them sleepy before you boil them. I have met some people who put them straight on the BBQ which is horrific

I know you need a licence to trap them, but I have seen some debate about catching them without a trap (i.e. the bacon on a string trick). Not researched it enough to want to test it in court yet mind. Anyone know good locations around any of my usual haunts?

You could email the environmental agency and ask, I think they are also very fussy about the site but apart from that its not a problem
