Bought 8 demi-johns for 4 at a car boot sale yesterday, and Miff's brother bought him a cider press for 12 at a car boot in Somerset last week.

Was wondering what other bargains people have picked up at boot sales?

Yesterday I got a Le Creuset caserole for 4.00 Yes 4.00 And 7 balls of mohair for 3. My youngest got a trilobyte for a quid and I bought a lovely hand crocheted hat for my bezzie mates' daughter for a quid. A while ago I got 3 metres of beautiful 50's heavy cotton with a rose print for 10p

I *heart* car boot sales

A cat basket - big and strong for 5 and a plastic greenhouse - which turns out to be the one with four shelves and in perfect condition for another 5 (I didn't barter ) Very delighted - but I had actually gone looking for an old fireguard or three I also find it's the best place for plants - at least then you know they will like the local conditions.

I buy loads of stuff from boot fairs.
Have had masses of winemaking equipment and lots of fishing stuff , all very cheap. I manage to pick up some lovely dressing up outfits for my grandaughters and have picked up a solid metal pig trough for my daughter for a pound and a hand powered sausage maker too, again a pound ,amongst loads of other bargains.
I love bootfairs and I love bargains.

Hi Pippa - welcome

Best place for them I'd say - kids of today are far to pampered if you ask me (in best Grumpy Old Woman voice)

Welcome to the forum Pippa

Car boot sales? Hmmm ho we miss them.

I got all my demi-jons and the rest of my winemaking gear (hydrometer/jar, syphons, fermentation locks, etc etc) from Rufforth car boot (Rob might know of it) while we were still in England.

Could we maybe have a "car boot sale" part of Downsizer within the traders section. No cash, just swaps of course

Wine anyone?

Haven't been to one for a while, but we had a small one in the village a year ago for Hall funds and I sold tons of jam & shutney, as well as buying a 'new' stereo for 2. Must go to another soon.

I hadn't been to one for a while either, but with Miff's bargain 12 cider press, thought I'd go and see what I could find

I am a complete addict and our entire house is furnished and decorated with stuff from auction and Car Boot Sales (we don't do "new" as a rule). I love the thrill of the chase - you never know what you will find. Books are the things I swoop on first and rarely come back empty-handed. Then costume jewellery for my eldest daughter, mincers (I seem to have a breeding herd now), china etc. Hard to think of a candidate for best buy, but have had a couple of engagement rings for 1 a piece, a big copper ladle for 8 a few years back now (was worth about 80 at the time, but auction prices have gone down in recent years), brand new seed-stacker still in box (5) recently - exactly what I needed too. Loads of books at anything from 10p to 1.50 a time, including some rareish botanical ones. Wine-making stuff too of course. Oh, and once a tidy English leather pony saddle for 10, which I sold on for 75. Gosh, that was a few years back now.

I "viewed" a lovely boot sale up near Aberaeron last Sunday, bought some herbs, a Portmeirion vase (4.50) and may go there to sell my junk and plants in a couple of weeks' time. It had a lovely atmosphere - far nicer than the one on Carmarthen showground which is our nearest.
