Has anyone promised an article on basic composting? I ask because a friend at work has just arranged a compost bin and doesn't have a clue about making compost. With the help of our chickens processing ability I just tend to through stuff in the bins and it rots down. I could do an article for a beginner but was wondering if there are any compost fanatics out there?

I've got a compost bin in our garden - it's not a posh composter, I just put some large holes in the bottom on one of my old plastic feedbins (to enable worms to get in), drilled some holes up the sides, for drainage and ventilation). I try to layer the 'ingredients' Kitchen waste (veg peelings, tea bags, etc)., that will break down goes in it, I shred newspaper and so on and er,

we have added some human urine. When lundy has trimmed the grass, that has gone in as well.

Mine seems to be doing ok, it's been on the go about 8-9 months so far - only problem is turning the lot out.

There's bound to be some expert on compost out there.

We are at a bit of an impasse with ours really. I assume most people have a lot more places to put the compost than we do, as ours is not turning out great, we don't really klnow what to do with it. jema

I'm sure Tahir said he'd got a compost mountain, we could all pester him for an article.

our compost looks like darkish brown leaves by the time its finished.I dont do anything with it at the moment so there is about 3 years worth down behind the shed.The new stuff looks like a rubbish dump in a bin but it does rot down in the end. I was very pleased last year to see worms in there because I didnt put them in.Now my son does the lawn for extra dosh, it gets grass added to it throughout the grass growing season (OH could never be bothered with the grass box)
