Just a comment really - I was really surprised to see some ordinary field mushrooms growing between the edge of the shingle and the sand dunes, at the beach this morning. Must be very salty land and almost pure sand! I can't swear that they were field mushrooms but it is one I am pretty confident about. I didn't pick them - they looked a bit less tasty than usual - slightly more leathery skin - not surprisingly - I could hardly stand up in the gale this morning and the sand was stinging my cheeks.
Would most lilkely have been Agaricus bernardii, looks like a slightly more robust, tougher looking field mushroom and thrives on dunes. Likes it salty; it appears sometimes next to roads that get lots of grit.
Yes - that will be it - definitely looked less tasty and tender. Also feel that if something can grow in such harsh condition then it deserves to be left.
