You can also register to stop cold calls and annoying faxes.

We registered for both the mailing and telephone preference service in October last year.

It has certainly cut down on the junk post...just got to convince the postie to stop pushing those hand delivered by your postman envelopes through the door.

The telephone one worked very quickly, the only cold call type things we get now are the occasional recorded messages ones, usually with an American accent.

To get rid of those, I think you have to contact your local post office directly, rather than the mailing preference service, telling them not to deliver anything that does not actually have your name on the envelope. The only down side of doing this is that you will not get things like notices from your council about changes to bin collection times, etc.

You can also use it to help stop stuff addressed to the previous owners of your house.

We've lived here just over 4 years, we get post for the previous owners, who still live in our village, but we don't see them, if you know what I mean!!!

When we move we let everyone we can think of know we are moving, we get all sorts of junk mail for them.

I used to have their new address, but lost it a couple of years ago - didn't think I'd still be re-directing mail to them!
