Just spent best part of a week helping someone sort out a virus infection that AVG missed. Looks like the updates on the free version were a bit slow coming out.

In the reviews they tend to say that. It's much better than nothing but not as good as some of the best ones you buy.
In your list, should backup data regularly be in there?
