We've spent much of Easter having a clear out, so this morning a carefully loaded the volvo with four lots of charity stuff - household and furniture for poverty aid; kids clothes and toys for the kids hospice shop; books for oxfam books. Afterwards, all that was left was a box of magazines and a dozen old ring binders that no-one wanted, so I called in at the dump on the way back.

"Excuse me have you thought about taking those to a charity shop and being less wastefull?" Said the young lady. "Yes" "I said, "I have and I have but they don't want them, do you", "Oh no" she says, "but you shouldn't throw them away".

My gast was flabbered.

I would have rolled them up and inserted them one by one so that her voice rose to a level where only the bats could find her tiresome.

Somebody once told me off for picking blackberries - she said I was stealing from the birds. I pointed out that the birds didn't actually eat the fruit, they left it to rot and I was going to put it to good use...

I thought you meant accost as in to take things from them before they dumped them not accost as in repimand people for not holding your opinion. Either way the answer is no, in the first case as the dump recycle and sell the stuff themselves and in the second because in Britain's caring sharing modern world you're more likely to get thumped as a response rather than a considered response.

i tend to follow the builders around collecting the things they leave behind!!!...best find..a pair of stained glass windows!!!

i did once pull over and ask a young lad why he was fly tipping to which the boys wound down the back window and pointed and hysterically chanted " fly tipper, fly tipper". he was not amused!

Someone once pulled into a layby to berate me for flytipping---until I pointed out that I was actually loading my car with old bricks someone had fly tipped there. I don't suppose accosting someone at the dump is worse than suggesting to total strangers they don't need a carrier bag which I've heard people do. Seems rude to me.

Or any worse than going up to pregnant women in restaurants and telling them they shouldn't be drinking .

You should have said that that was the whole point, you were employed by the local council to reduce the local bird population by stealing their winter food.

And then added an evil laugh.

As I have mentioned elsewhere I am a humourless old bat .

Maybe it had nothing to do with the carpet.

We weren'ty too sure - may have been the transit van, may have been we were rather scruffy, may have been the carpet but it was uncalled for.
