me and a friend have started to write a book in hope to publish it. do you know any one who can publish them cheaply

I don't know very much about self publishing but there is a book called the writers handbook here (fingers crossed the url works)

which has lots of useful information and contact details for publishers.
Its not easy getting a book deal though as there is lots of competition out there.

Anyway to answer your question we found www.lulu.com the easiest and cheapest way. You upload it all, choosing the size, style, colour etc then order as many as you want. People can also buy from the site directly (which is now linked with amazon).

How long a book is it planned to be? If its relatively short you can successfully print at home on a domestic printer, but its only really a good option for books of a bout 28 pages or so, and more and they look untidy when you fold and staple them.

I have a mix of books in print, the short ones I self publish, the big hardback one is done by a publisher, both types sell, just depends on what you want it to look like and the likely distribution.

you can also go to a place called cafe press and they will publish as and when someone purchases so good if you don't want to buy a whole run of something (self publish) still writing mine as well tahir...well....not exactly writing it, more wanting to write it and not having time.....

Mostly on herbs, costume, textiles and food, all from a historical perspective, the shiny published one is my book on the archaeology and history of cosmetics- https://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0750938870/sallypointer-21

guess it depends what your book is on. there are several co-operative publishers now (that's what I'm using for my book out this summer)

they don't charge you for setting up the printing costs etc but you get a lower % per book but still better than lots of big publishing houses.

be careful with self publishing as you often have to have loads printed off and then its up to you to sell / distribute them at a cost etc.

good luck, I loved writing mine its the editing I hated.

A more sensible answer ... Possibly one option is self publishing but that is only really an option for very tightly defined markets, e.g. if you write a history of your village then that's a perfect candidate for self publishing as no publisher would be interested in something with that small a market. So I wouldn't dismiss self publication but I would be wary of it.

I have also published books both as a contributing author and editor - I have also set-up and coordinated planning and writing groups for new ideas and projects - In my experience it takes a lot of dedication and hard work to reach the publishing stage - not least of which is finding a suitable and supportive publisher.

Why don't you consider making a commitment to writing a blog, you and your friend can each contribute on a regular basis - this way you can 'dip your toe in the water' and establish if you have what it takes to become a writer. There is a lot of support material out on the www - good luck - what subject will you be writing about and what genre?

My books are published through Lulu as well - you do need to be a bit careful with which binding you choose as some are printed and bound abroad and the shipping costs can be stupid. But other than that they're brilliant.
