I'm feeling pretty jaded at the moment, just a non stop list of things needing doing and no means of getting away from it How do others running small businesses control the hours?

I refuse to count the average hours per week I currently do, it would make me feel more tired than I already am

From when I leave home to when I get home, excluding time spent working from home 72-80 hrs p.w. I'd be happy with 60.

I don't count the hours, 'officially' it's 56, more or less depending upon what you call 'work' and what needs doing. No point killing yourself to enjoy the good life.

so the obvious question is- is it better than working for someone else? I work 5 days, including travelling 11 a day, but I dont have the stresses that running your own business bring. I do have the frustrations of working for a plc and the nonsense that that brings though. Its easy for me to say that I wish I worked for myself but I bet it brings stresses.

We could never work for anyone else again. Shop is open 42 hours a week, sometimes we work late into the night when we're busy. Soon we'll be working 7 days a week so 52 hours a week. Bah humbug

Then whilst I do all the dometic/chicken stuff, Steve does the financial paperwork for another about 2 hours a day.

Even so, it still is far far better than working for a boss - even though you are still in effect working for your landlord if you rent, and the taxman.

How do others running small businesses control the hours?

Take on staff?
Drop some bits that don't make you enough money?
Take proper time off from it regularly?
Don't want to be annoying because I do know how difficult running a small business is. I also know that most of you are planning ahead for a quieter time. And it helps just to have a moan.

Now that I'm working for myself again, I probably do around 10hr on a normal day, more in the run up to an exhibition, where weekdays might be 12 hours plus much of Sat and Sunday. It does get very tiring at times - for instance, this past weekend has been a frame making marathon and still more to do before exhibition deadline a week tomorrow. Would I have it any other way? Nope. No way EV
