When we packed up and left England I had the bright idea that we would put all of our music on the new laptop and give the CD's away. What I didn't do was back up the music on the new laptop.. well it was new, what could go wrong?

Well it did go wrong and we lost the lot. Had to do a reset to factory settings.

That was about two years ago, I have only brought this up now as it seems there are some incredibly clever people on here.

Question is, is there a way to find our music after all this time?

if you had asked straight away, you may have had a chance of recovering a significant portion of the files. The restore process could have left the information on the hard drive, just removing the index system. There are programs that can recover this information.

However, after 2 years worth of normal use, I wouldn't really expect to find much.

Try it. You have nothing to loose & every thing to gain.

Its amazing just how much stuff can still be found years later. So much in fact you might struggle to find what you want amongst the rest.

We have misplaced the box with our favourite cd's since we moved here 3 years ago - Led Zep, Terry Reid, Soundtrack of our Lives, Francoise Hardy and so forth. We asked the person who helped us, and they didn't have them, s can only guess they're at the bottom of the pile in the far corner of stuff we haven't quite reached yet

There are lots of file recovery programmes about, I managed to delete about 85000 tracks that I'd ripped from CD before I realised the value of backups...

I managed to save quite a lot using this:

https://www.r-tt.com/

No idea whether it'll find anything after all this time but you never know.

Also, as I said above, make sure you're doing backups. You can use something like Replicator to set up some basic backups quite easily:

Do a search for "undelete" some will find them all but only recover a few before you have to pay. But at least then you will know if its worth paying for it. Some are totally free but dont seem to find as much.

I used the R-TT trial version to see if it could find anything before I registered

Also I would like to say sorry for asking Toggle to send me music. I was very drunk and crying into my wine. See HELP thread on poultry. No excuse I know.

I wouldn't bother recovering, just use [insert nefarious method here] if your ISP is fast and ignorant enough.

Why would they want to do that if they can recover by non nefarious methods?

I e-mailed RTT yesterday. They have replied that the chances of finding the files are zero.
Now going to google to see if I can find someone a bit more optimistic
