My nephew is just finishing his Phd in an ecology based subject at Bangor University and as part of his studies, he needs to find locations where yellow water lillies are growing in natural pools and lakes
Its way over my head of course, but he's looking at the amounts of, I think he said methane, that they are giving off into the atmosphere.
I've told him of a few spots but he needs more to be able to complete his work.

My mum says that there used to be yellow water lilies at Bodiam Castle East Sussex. And she thinks there may be some in West Cornwall and will get more details if any use?

Are you thinking of irises?

None up here but seeing the rate our pond filled up 'naturally' with various flora I'm not sure how many natural sites there will be anymore.

I didn't know there were yellow lilies ...so, if it's flag irises you're after, there are plenty on most of the wetlands on Anglesey. You see loads on the marshy bits nr Llangefni when you drive across the island.

if it's w'lilies, sorry, I can only think of places where there are white ones.

Well I never knew that...

Quote:
During winter, when water lilies have no surface leaves, the gases in the rhizome lacunae approach equilibrium with the gases of the sediment water. The resulting increase of internal pressure is manifested by the sustained streams of bubbles (up to 37 percent methane and 6 percent carbon dioxide) that escape when emerging leaves are torn in the spring. Methane continues to enter the roots and rhizome during summer, rapidly moves up the petioles, and passes out through the emergent leaves into the atmosphere.
