My SiL has bottled some gooseberries (oven method, well sterilised and in a sugar solution) and 3 of them have a splodge of mould on the top, like the mould you sometimes get on jam - about 2-3cms across. On jam we both agree we'd scrape it off and eat it but on bottled fruit? Any suggestions on it's edibility?

Are you going to eat it straight from the jar (like jam) or cook it into a pie? Second would be preferable if you are tempted to eat it.....

I agree with cooking ..
Even the jars were sterilised the lids are difficult to do so and when you fasten the lids..the air trapped in between won't be 'sterile'.
Next year..after bottling and sealing them up..Immerse your jars and bottles into big pan of water..put old jar lids underneath so the glass is not in straight contact with bottom of the pan and make sure the water lever is about inch or so above the lids..bring to a gentle boil. For small jars give about 10 min boiling time and larger 15 mins.
That will ensure the contents and the air gap is thorougly cleaned from mold forming bacteria..and your jams and bottled fruit will store long time without getting spoiled
Just remember immerse the hot jars into warm/hot water so they don't react for the sudden temperature chance.
