EV and I are in the process of making a joint will. We consulted with a solicitor this morning and their charge is 180+VAT is this reasonable?

Wait till they do the annual free writing in return for a charity donation.
But do do the will.

Ours cost me 3 bottles of decent Barolo

I think that was the sort of money we paid for mirror wills

For a straight forward mirror will it's on the upper side as I've seen similar prices inclusive of VAT.

Yes, we paid that for ours. However, we did at the time know at sometime in the then future we planned o have more children and asked about adding/altering names which was said to be free...nevertheless they since wanted to charge use 95 to add Maximus... so make sure you have details of such potential changes and the charges in writing... I should take my own advice from time to time (you never know who will come and go into an out of a life .. you might suddenly wish to be specific about an item or sum of money to a specific person for example.)

Several charities offer a free wills service as long as you leave them a small bequest. I did mine via the Soil Association. For 20 ish pound membership, this could be a cheaper option.

I don't think that will cost much less- I'd worked it out with my children beforehand. The solicitor had very little work to do Anyone with a complicated will would pay more

istr you can write a will yourself without need of any formalities, does still have to be witnessed and signed. However, if challenged, istr it is much easier for it to/could fail or wishes not be carried out ...

There is a book called Parker's modern will precedents, it's handy for giving the sort of passages found in wills, if you intend to write your own.

Our fee and suspect others too, include storage and future help to our executors.

That's reasonable for a joint will. Unless a will is particularly complex (trusts etc) about 100 per person is about average, thus 180 plus VAT is perfectly reasonable.
