I suspect I have rats coming into my back garden, or at least there's evidence of burrowing next to one of the paths, a burrow running just under the suface level from next to the veg patch in the direction of the greenhouse and I have found two entrance holes about 15 - 20 mm wide. If it was in the middle of the grass I'd blame moles but rats have to be an possibility.

I suspect they are coming in from the woodland behind (where BTW I keep my compost heap) and as I have heard a lot more agricultural noises from the farm behind that recently they could have been disturbed and pushed out.

The question is what is the best way to persuade them not to take up residence? I could try poisons but they would be a little uncontrolled in the open, as would traps. Shooting would be an option but could be time consuming and possibly only remove such a small fraction that it wouldn't help that much?

Any suggestions?

We had total success using Fen (sp)? traps and agree with all Darren G said in the second link.

First you need to observe a bit more to see where their run is. They ususally prefer to keep close to the sides of buildings, they feel safer that way. Then place a covered trap against the side of the building, we didn't even need to bait ours. They take a preferred route and go through it if you have done your homework.

Coincidentally the current thread on moles includes a pointer to a web site (https://forum.downsizer.net/about7360.html&highlight=) that looks good for traps. Anyone know which sorts of traps work best?

The trap man is very good. He offers a quick service, and has a whole range of traps. He also sells bins too

I've just been looking at that site. I don't see any bins there. Do you mean storage bins or vermin proof waste bins?
