Hi I am new here,
My Name is Rachel and I live in Lancashire. I enjoy growing my own and foraging a bit round and about where I live.
I have enjoyed picking a few bits this year again, made chutneys and jams etc, hope someone can give me inspiration for Haws?? There seems to be a bumper crop this year and I am struggling as to what to make with them. Anyone have any recipes and can you tell me whether I'm wasting my time with them - have been told they don't taste very nice....

Look forward to getting to know you all.

Rach

Hello there, Welcome to the forum.

As far as haws go, I think they fall into the category of "well you can eat them, but unless you are starving why bother?"

Just them leave for the birds.

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone, and for the information - I won't bother with the Haws, there's plenty of other stuff out there to scrump!

I've noticed it's a bumper year for all kinds of fruiting plants - loads of plums and apples are just magic!

Welcome.

I was noticing the numbers of haws on the trees yesterday and thought it was a shame that they aren't worth using. Crab apples are around in abundance as well. I foresee chilli jelly being made in this house soon.

Hi there

If it's a bumper year maybe it's going to be a harsh winter

Hi 12Bore, I am in East Lancs - live in a little village just outside Colne (of Boundary Mill fame!) .

Would love to know if anyone is nearby......

I'm over in Morecambe - Welcome from a fellow Lancastrian - there's Northern Lad not far from you buts he's recently got married and doesn't get on here very often these days, there are a few of us over the Yorkshire border in Otley and Skipton - then the next lot are South Manchester/Cheshire/North Wales to the South and Gil in the Scottish Borders

Oh and I'm the same - the haws around here are massive - I've found a recipe for Hawthorn Jelly that I'm going to try - might be horrible but it's worth a try
