Mrs C and I are looking at the idea of buying a house in France, so that we will have somewhere to holiday and maybe renting it out to people at other times of the year. Has anyone here had any experience with this? Any advise is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

No experience, but we are looking to do the same... going looking at the area around south of Limoges first week April.

Oh it's easily done though isn't it? I mean I can't get over the price of some of the property over there. It's like the UK in the 90's.

It can be a minefield....not just in the Somme

You will find thousands of ex pats that "know the ropes"; have " got the t-shirt"

etc., etc.

take your time & look around

see what the place is like at different times of year....climates can vary enormously

expect the unexpected....& don't believe people that tell you that it's "sooooooo much cheaper than England..."

Lived here 11 years, & there are still surprises

but when it's good, it's great

You need to think about the costs of getting someone to maintain the place. It's not much of a holiday if you spend all your time painting/cleaning gutters out/unclogging your septic tank. And the costs of getting someone to be a concierge if you're going to let it out to others.

The type of house will also determine who lets it and when you can go on holiday. e.g. family market = school holidays etc.

A friend said (without thinking) but its sooo far, and you wont know anyone....which was eactly the situation when we moved from Scotland to Cornwall, so we're not put off.

We like the French, love the area were planning to live in (and have visitied it when its freezing, dark and at its most depressing), and are looking forward to a new challenge.

Your a long time dead, and before I get to that stage Id like to live my life.

I upped & moved after selling everything, knew nobody when I moved in, have been skint to the point where my entire wealth was less than 10 euros....but I'm still here after 11 years & not thinking of moving on

Mousjoos Ive been watching the pennies since before the kids were born, so Im well used to it now. Im not going to say owt more as Ive had a glass or two of wine and Ive been known to tell some home truths...., but thank you for your support. Perhaps we can swap notes?

Sorry I couldn't send the info you wanted before, but I was working away from home, nearish to Limoges as it happens,

I think if you come with an open mind & the wish to integrate, & not join every english speaking club & association in the area, you'll be fine

there are always problems; I've made just about every mistake there is to make re. moving abroad, but this is my home & it doesn't occur to me to think about moving elsewhere

thanks, appreciate it. Im really looking forward to visiting again at the start of April. main question this week is after staying 2 nights in Perigeueux would we prefer to go East or west (Angouleme or St Yreiex le Perche )
