Hiding part of a url in text

I've noticed lately that I can type a URL on Twitter without the prefix (eg www.) and it redirects fine. Is this something that could be done in general text online if the comment section (eg on Facebook or similar) doesn't have the option to use the [url] tags, as on here?

Yes, pretty much can be used everywhere. You don't usually need the www. bit these days

Yes, it seems to work fine with .com .co.uk & .uk but not with .farm, which still needs the www. - I want the text to read Rosewood.Farm, rather than www.Rosewood.Farm It works on Twitter, but not on Facebook (nor on here)

Our software doesn't hold with these new-fangled ways of doing things I'm afraid. Facebook obviously haven't caught up either.

Facebook may not recognise .farm as a valid domain in which to wrap the anchor element around. Same goes for DS perhaps?

It works fine direct from the browser so yes I suspect vegplot is correct, it's not yet showing up as a valid domain

It works for DS but not FB.

I blame Twitter - if they didn't do it it would never have bothered me!
