do i recall an "africar"or some such name ?a wood chassis ,body,wheels etc with minimal metal bits except the (fairly simple to make and mend) engine

They did another one with a wooden engine... it wooden go.

There are quite a few wooden bicycle manufactures, most of them across the pond.
Renova are about the most renowned.
Laminates of various woods are far stronger & a more comfortable ride.
