I wear home knitted socks with my boots, and as the feet wear out quite quickly, even with sock wool, I reknit the feet. Son wants me to make him a pair as I darned a pair or woollen ones he had. So next time I go near a wool shop I need to get some more sock wool.

Ah, you're following a famous example..Sir Clough Williams Ellis (the architect behind Portmeirion's Home for Retired Buildings) used to wear knee length hand knitted yellow socks with the foot knitted separately and sewn on...then his wife only knitted new feet regularly
It's getting the pattern repeats to match up that's the proper nuisance!

I would like to volunteer to take the place of the sock "rejecter" in your family, frewen, are there any preconditions? I did have a pair when I was a child with 3 different colours, "re-footed" twice, just not as high up the second time!
