A friend at work surprised me by saying he used to make a fair bit of homemade wine. He still has quite a few bottles that's 8-10 years old and was wondering if it's still ok to drink. (One type is crab apple)

I'd say try it and see. If it tastes bad throw it away, if it tastes ok then drink. Does anyone think there may be anything to worry about?

No there's nothing to worry about. It will probably be disgusting, but as far as I know there is no way for wine to turn into something lethal.

It'll depend on the alcohol content. Brew 'em strong and as a rule they'll keep better and mature reasonably well. If it's oxidised or spoiled, it'll be obvious.

I have heard there are exceptions to this rule and some quite low alcohol stuff also has long term improvement properties. Still a bit dubious on this one myself.

I know Riesling can age very well for 10-20 years or more and is often 7-8% vol.

My fried will try some over Christmas so if I see him back at work I know they weren't dodgy.
