Help! Does anyone know how I could obtain some quince by mail order? I'd like to try some before I decide whether we can fit in a tree. I'm in Lincolnshire & don't have transport [well, not for most of the week]

Hi Goxhill,

Naomi runs a smallholders club in Lincolnshire.

She might know someone not far from you who has a tree full of quinces...

Did you get some?

I have janapese quince in the back garden if you would like one?

Or TWO?

Grows like a flipping weed!

Tiptree's sell fruit jams/jellies by mail order including quince; I think you have to buy a case but you can mix them. Not the fruit, but at least you would get an idea of the flavour.

Tiptree's quince jelly tastes of almost nothing, you won't get even a hint of the fragrance that you'll get from your own.

I like quince syrup and I recently tasted an excellent medlar jam but there are many other trees I'd go for in prefence to either unless I had loads of room.

By the way I hope that doesn't come across as a diss of Tiptree, they're absolutely fantabulous, I never buy any other jam, just got this week:

Greengage
Damson
Mulberry
and 4 jars of Christmas Conserve (I use it as the base for my mince)

If you go to any of the upcoming apple festivals you'll probably find tucked away somewhere a few quince

Thanks guys. I've got a small japanese quince & put the few fruit in a 'found & grown' jam - hedgerow-type with some garden bits chucked in. Don't hold out much hope of getting to an apple festival Weekends seem far too short - they should have at least 3 days by law!!

Thanks anyway. Sorry hardworkinghippy - somehow I completely missed your post. I'll contact Naomi cos it's worth a try!

quinces don't take up too much room - think they can be trained up walls. the small japanese ones are medium garden shrub size. i picked 3lb at one go off a friend's quince treelet earlier this autumn (lots more fruit still to ripen on it), and am making an experimental gallon of wine, in the hope catching the fragrance plus the alcohol. and quince jelly is superb.
