I am about to put up a plasterboard ceiling which is trivial, but I am wondering whether to artex it or not. It will be a bathroom ceiling with rescessed low voltage halogen lights. I am bit worried that I will make a mess of artex patterns Any thoughts? jema

Use a scrunched up plastic shopping bag and do a push, turn and release method, which will produce a functional blobby pattern.

I used a notched plastic trowel (the one used to put grout on walls; mine has wide teeth on one side and fine on the other, I used the fine one).

If you hold it at about 25� and turn it round in a circle and then keep repeating this overlaying each circle. It should give a nice uniform pattern.

To tidy up around the edges, run a small square edged trowel or a small piece of thick card about 2� wide around them to create a smooth border.

First time I did it I was convinced I would make a real mess of it, but it turned out quite good, I was really pleased with it

I am implacably opposed to artex in all forms. Skim it properly.

couldn't agree more; why not go the whole hogg and 'plaster' the ceiling with polystyrene tiles or posters of the Bay City Rollers - no offence mind.

Would it stop you buying a house if all the ceilings were artexed?

It probably would, other things being equal. Given a choice between two otherwise similar properties I wouldn't buy one with Artex. When we were buying in Motspur Park we rejected a couple on the grounds of Artex and pine panelling.

We have a pine panelled loo

Which I keep meaning to rip out.

Trouble with skimming is that for an amatuer it is even harder to get a decent result than with Artex.

Apart from my biggoted snobbish view on Artex, if you get bored with it, or if you want to skim later, it can be difficult; often have to resort to removing all the plasterbaord (or what ever it is) to renew the finish. As for a house with Artex, personnally wouldn't buy one. Often had all sorts of additives which I'd rather not mention.

Asbestos is possible in old artex over 20 years old I think.

Glad you said it. I don't want to be a scare monger, I have to be careful in my job. Bear in mind that many materials sit around for a while and 20 years could be considered to be a conservative view - but not necesarly mine - alledgedly.

It also has ground bones in it, which is why it stinks when wet and drying out.

I don't object much to it, in a decorative sense, though I think it is a bit dated, but I don't like the maintenance aspect.
