Phases of the moon: does it really make a difference? Locally, villagers follow the phases of the moon to sow, plant and harvest vegetables and fruit - some even say they have their hair cut when the moon is at a certain stage. Has anyone out there experience of using the phases of the moon to plan their growing and harvesting - any moon related tips welcomed.

I'm a great believer in the influence of the moon.

My Dad swears by it, he says it makes a dramatic difference, I also intend to test it out next spring when the growing season really kicks off, I thought about a test area, one row of stuff planted at my convieniance and another at the correct phase of the moon just to see if there is a difference

I found this the other day but haven't had time to go right through it yet

Never found that anyone doing this kind of thing has any better reslts than I do, and I'm lazy with my allotment so its not like I'm working harder.

It isn't hard to prove or disprove, which makes me think that the vehement proponents of this concept either don't know how to demonstrate objective proof or they're nervous to try.

I was talking to a biodynamic farmer a few months back, and asked whether he sowed etc at the prescribed moon / astrological times. His response was pragmatic : only if other conditions were already right. Mostly he went by weather and climate.

But maybe the locals where you are know a thing or two about when is the right time to sow etc., based on years of experience of the area. And will be good at interpreting weather signs.

Doesn't Bob Flowerdew swear by moon cycles for planting?

Don't you just swear by moon cycles?

Presumably I'd never be able to plant and sow by the moon cycle - I'd probably just be chucking it all around the kitchen garden in a bad temper

sorry

I read a book about this a while ago. It's possible it could make a difference and I don't suppose it could do any harm if you followed it and it didn't
