That's true for almost all these issues though, there's never one right answer for all sets of circumstances. (Apart from how to roast potatoes properly.)

I can think of quite a few others...

There's only me, so I wash up by hand, once every 2-3 days when there is hot water anyway, unless doing a lot of winery or preserving work, which gets done every day and wouldn't fit in a dishwasher anyway.

Not really, they tend to be more economical than washing by hand. We haven't got one but my mum has had one since the eighties. The number of times I have to boil the kettle to wash a dishwasher sized batch I can appreciate that it would be one of the less environmentally unfriendly machines we use.

Coffee machines, grilling machines, tumble driers, deep fat fryers, rice cookers, juicers, bread makers, electric knives, etc, etc.

I'm sure some people find them essential (we use our bread maker at least a couple of times a week) but I bet many are hardly ever used.

I chose to have a dishwasher rather than have children. Does that let me off the hook?

Because I have neither children nor a dishwasher, can I now eat factory farmed chicken? Is that how it works?

actually, i would list most children as fairly useless in the kitchen. until they are old enough to wash up properly.

Can we include outside machines, too?
Snow blower
leaf blower
heated driveway
riding lawnmower (for 1/2 acre residential lawns, I'm not talking tractors for farming)

As for diswhashers... Just did dishes from yesterday, by hand. And I used less water than it is generally assumed to be needed to wash dishes, at least in the comparisons that show the most efficient diswhashers to be more water efficient than washing by hand.

I can only conclude that my dishes being clean is an illusion, and that I merely imagined that doing the dishes from all day yesterday (when we had guests all afternoon and evening) only took a little while. It must be my imagination that lifting the plate from one draining board into the sink, washing it, and putting it on to the other draining board is exactly the same (or maybe less) work than putting the plate into the dishwasher and taking it out again.

It seems to me that the idea of diswhashers being 'eco' in comparison to hand washing is possibly true, if the person washing the dishes uses way more water than really is needed. And that the idea of them being a great labour saving device is approaching myth status (short of having to do commercial volumes of dish washing!).

It isn't that I have no kitchen gadgetry, but I do like to select things that get used, and that save a serious amount of work. For the space, expense, energy use and water use, I don't believe dish washers are worthwhile.

I get where you're coming from, but I'll bet that you've got plenty of possessions that use more energy than is necessary. Its not about being perfect, its about aspiring to be better (imho).
