Jack is now having driving lessons (I'm sure he's still only 4 years old - where did the time go to? ) and we're now looking at cars...and the dreaded insurance. Has anyone got any recent thoughts or experience of insuring cars for 17 years olds - or heard of any good deals?

The best deal we got, for my daughter, was through Norwich Union, which is not on any of the comparison websites.
The other alternative, which we are looking at for my own 17 yr old son is

this if for provisional drivers only, and does not affect your own insurance re no claims etc.

Also, the car makes a huge difference...don't assume that the smaller the car is, the cheaper the insurance will be... we had a Skoda Fabia, and found it was considerably cheaper to insure than say a Fiesta, or Nissan Micra etc.

start saving from what i was told about �2 k a year having a black box thingy can get a discount and makes for safer driving cos it records speeds and locations and times ,iirc there is discount for not driving at night and taking advanced driving lessons option 2 is join the army and bring the truck home

A chap on another forum said he'd got together with some mates and got insurance collectively as a mutual. Said they saved a fortune, but was not forthcoming with any details on how to actually do it...

Can you pick up any lecturing work of a weekend and evening? Check the insurance before he falls in love with a particular car. It does make a difference. Doing passplus used to and it was free to do in Wales. I am two years out of date on this though. His driving instructor will be able to advise him.

Don't bother, unless you're very rich & prepared not to be, is my advice. I didn't & just used hire cars if I needed to go far, or car-shared with mum if I didn't.

Errrr...why? My current working week, including travelling, is 7am to 7pm daily. Why would I want to work at night and weekends as well?

I got a quote for Sam on my car and it was so horrendous I had to sit down - my insurance on my own is about �350 a year, add in Sam and it went upto nearly �3K, there is no way we can afford that at the moment

Actually we all know how bad it is, my insurance is 1000 a year for 38yo, employed, married with children in my area so its no wonder so many younger drivers drive uninsured is It? No excuse but simple fact these days.

Indeed Pilsbury and it's not right when ones insurance probably costs more than what the car is you buy.

maybe a big spike in the middle of the steering wheel and a trunk monkey would avoid the need of insurance
