My precious cider apple tree seems to have been assassinated by the local squirrel Either that or the dieback and loss of bark below the graft was a slow death caused by two hard winters.

So I have the perfect excuse to go the the Brogdale Cider festival next weekend.

M26 - 2 years old.

It was in a container as I wanted to keep an eye on it and wait until the flood protection works had been finished at the allotment before planting it out. It looked fine and even had a decent amount of blossom earlier in the year, then started to die back. When I lifted it, I noticed a wound at soil level, but even then not all the way round. Doesn't look like canker either.

Sorry to hear about your bereavement. If it was squirrels you will see bark on the ground round it and fresh wounds on the stem. They tend to attack worse in spring when the sap is rising and there is a lot of sugar in the sap.

Sounds like crown rot https://apples.hdc.org.uk/Crown-Rot-and-Collar-Rot.asp

I think they're having the plum events at Brogdale too, delayed because of the late season.
