For a start you will need at least 2, Pigs will spot a weakness, so safe is better than cheap and cheerful.

You say you are going to be away next winter but between now & then you could raise two batches of wearers to pork weight or decent gilts to an age where another pig farmer would be happy to purchase them for breeding.
difficult bit is not giving them names & becoming too attached.

dpack, many thanks for that... I thought a pig was a pig, I think I might have to start interviewing these piggly pigs just to make sure I get the right one. Seriously, I am very grateful for all the input everyone has given, the flame throwing panda, though a good idea initially has now been put to one side. It really does seem a pig is the way to go, then 'deal' with it in november.... so I will be putting up a new post regarding preserving meat... but please keep the ideas coming...

Surely a typo that Nick can run faster than him too, dpack's carrying a lot less meat pies than our Nick...
