Well, I've applied to do the beekeeping Certificate at my local agri college As I'm in receipt of a tiny amount of housing benefit it won't cost me a penny I'm a bit scared

Ooh. You are brave. Let us know how you get on. I have reluctantly come to the conclusion that bees just aren't going to happen for me - I am too pathetically scared of being stung.

I am pathetically scared of being stung by bees and finding out that I get an anaphylactic shock reaction.

This is why I've never got round to beekeeping. One day, I am going to catch a bee in a glass jar, go and stand outside the regional infirmary's A&E, make it sting me and see what happens. Then if I'm OK, I'll go on a beekeeping course etc.

(been stung by wasps before, to no effect, other than pain)

You are brave! I'm going to sponser a hive for my dad - he's going to keep bees when he goes to france in the spring, and I'm going to buy an extra hive and set of bees for him, and go and help him extract the honey, and take the honey from 'my' hive. He's not pathetically scared of getting stung, but I am! I hope to make some honey and beeswax things, to give him in return, and I really, really want a go at mead (so much so, that I might clear out my crafts cupboard to make space for it!) He's not a big drinker though (despite moving to calvados!) so I'll just have to keep most of it!

The anaphylactic shock hasn't stopped me beekeeping, I just wear a lot of layers now and carry an epi-pen. I think its juts a case of healthy caution and always having someone with you if you know you react badly
