When I opened up the Muscovy hut this morning this little beauty was peeping out from under a very angry and hissing mum. She is sitting on nine eggs and I managed to see three chicks, grab a quick photo on my phone and then make a hasty retreat. Thirty six days she has been sitting on these eggs, it really is a long time, hopefully most of them will hatch. I'll get some more pics when they start to venture out.

Well the sun came out between the rain showers today and the Muscovy brought her nine chicks out. I'm really pleased this first time mother managed to hatch them all. I'm planning on growing these on for a few months to a size suitable for eating so we can put a few in the freezer.

Are they def pure muscovy? Mine were always yellow.
I understand that they can cross with other ducks.

I don't know whether they are pure bred or what is the usual colour of chicks as this the first time I've bred Muscovys.I have a lavender female, the magpie female in the picture and the male is a standard black and white colour so I should imagine there will be a mix of colours. Both birds were laying in the nest box before I put it in separate pen with the most broody one. What colours are your adult birds and what do you do with birds you raise?

I gave the last few females to a friend as they reproduced so madly. Too many to eat but I always ate as many as I could. I went from 5 females and one male to 45 ducks in one season! Mine were all black and white adults so perhaps the different colours produce different chick colours. They are all beautiful.

not if they grow up to be white muscovies... yellow ducklings make white ducks. I think it's down to the colouring of the parents

Mine all have black quiffs just like dad, otherwise all white now.
They started as all yellow bath toys! one has even taken to pecking my trouser leg when it wants attention, just like Dad!
Not a scooby how to sex them, but as they will all be for the freezer I wont fret.
