Interesting news article from the bbc regarding standby buttons and the amount of energy they use "Britons waste the equivalent of around two power stations' worth of electricity each year by leaving TV sets and other gadgets on standby............................." https://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/4620350.stm

A very good point. Clearly not enough folk were brought up by parents convinced that if you didn't switch everything off at the wall and pull the plug out when you finished with it, electricity would leak out and there would be some kind of disaster.

We don't either, especially the PC's

It's even more dangerous if you unplug stuff but leave the socket switched on. Electricity all over the floors and everything.

Got into the habit with the new house, a bit daft having LV lights but leaving the TV on all night. I would love to see energy saving devices fitted to all homes before we start building nuclear plants. I bet you could give AAA appliances to every house in britain for less than the cost of one nuclear reactor

i think everybody could put their hands up to this one

i leave the radio on sometimes when we go out for the dogs

they told me they like classic fm

sometimes i put the telly on standby while it work a bit on the 'pooter for the space of one prog say and then it goes back on

wasn't it once mooted that it takes more of the 'lectric to start something going then it does to keep it going or is that just a way of the 'lectric people to push the bills up?

I remember being told that as a kid...think it was about the lights in the house, took more lekkie to switch it off and back on again than it did to keep it on...hmmmm

I think that used to be the case with old-fashioned fluourescent strip lights - if you were out of the room for 15 minutes it wasn't worth turning them off because of start-up, but for longer, it was. No longer the case.

There was a discussion on the radio the other day about lightbulbs, and someone was suggesting that an enourmous amount of electric could be saved if everyone used low enegy ones. (can't remember the amount

but it was staggering!!)

Their solution was to tax the old ones, but wouldn't it be better to make the low energy ones zero rated for VAT (AND tax the old ones???

)

Perhaps we should ban the old ones, introduce free replacements schemes. How about banning household appliances that aren't 'a' rated?

My uncle is continually being sent low-energy light bulbs, free, from some consumer magazine somewhere that has gotten hold of his name. Sadly they are all screw-in ones, not bayonet, and so entirely useless for him I do not know why manufacturers continue to incorporate stand-by features on audio-visual and other goods in this day and age.

I was shocked when buying a new freezer in the summer how difficult it was to get an A rating chest freezer - we sort of came to the conclusion that perhaps it was the design but in looking around the shop could not believe how poorly rated many of the Americal style fridges were with ice makers in built into them - it looked like we were going backwards rather than forwards

The problem with appliances like cookers, microwaves and videos is that if you turn them off, you have to reset all the timers everytime you want to use them. Still turn my TV / video / DVD off, but the cooker and the microwave stay on standby.

Re. power consumption when you turn an appliance on - it is true that you get a bit of a power surge, but it is minimal and not really an excuse for leaving things on for lengthy periods!
