if i'm making a chilli and apple jelly can i just use a normal baby muslin cloth to let the mixture strain through or does it have to be a special one cause i haven't got one.

I do, but I don't know whether you are supposed to. Seems to work fine! I did (once) have some proper kitchen muslin, and it didn't look any different.

Why on earth not? In my time I've used old tights/stockings (well washed), old tea towels, garden fleece ...... As long as the fabric isn't too densely woven to allow the juice to drip through.
