miss k b (one of, the cavies ) had developed a nasty abscess on her neck after what we assume was a bite .yesterday i used benzocaine spray to numb the area ,snipped fur ,removed a big scab ,opened the wound with a tiny spear point lancet ,drained a lot of stinking pus and granular filth, deep irrigated the lesion using a one ml syringe and warm saturated saline .mopped and tidied ,dressed hole with one drop |"magic splosh oil"

today she is much better and im happy we avoided the added trauma of a trip to the vets for treatment,

the position and size of the abscess was a worry but the stress of travel /stranger danger /anesthetic may well have been worse ,she was very calm in the circumstances ,so was i ,i recon that was about as far as i would go in normal circumstances ,

i was curious to find out how much home vet we feel able to do

Far more than I thought I ever would do. I think for small things the stress of taking them to a vets can be far worse than home treatment but it's a balance with your own knowledge and ability against what the vet (or leaving well alone) can offer. I do have some nursing experience and I live with a farmer both make a difference.

Magic splosh oil sounds good. I have considered super glue but used stitches in the end.

I go as far as treating surface wounds with tincture of calendula.
But no further.

The times I've treated Giggy the Leghorn for cuts and scrapes I've usually ended up with more Gentian Violet on me.

I've successfully treated a piglet with an abscess ...... he was quite little though but even then it took two of us to hold him down.

200ml almond oil
10 ml lavender oil
10 ml tea tree oil
10 ml frankincence oil

this mix is good for any type of surface /punture wounds fresh or green ,it will cure immersion foot and similar skin rotting conditions,

it is a powerful anti bacterial ,anti fungal salve and soothing action on pain/itch as well as not stinging on application

works on humans and many critters i have tried

as a bonus it repels flies and lice and smells pleasant

applied to a wound or manky skin it is safe as far as i know (10 yrs with this mix )
do not drink ,you may die

ps it can stop chickens from pecking a recently farrowed sow's ladybits and will reduce unwanted wound licking for many critters as it tastes horrid and takes the itch etc away

pps a kitchen oil spray is a convenient applicator

Sub cutaneous & intra musclular injections.
Never had to stick a needle in a vein yet.
Removal of foreign objects from feet & hooves & applications of poultices & dressings.
Never stitched a wound, although I can't see why I couldn't.
I find the vet is most useful at diagnosing & once that's accomplished it's cheaper to do the administering yourself.

keeping the patient/sample animal still and safe for an iv is the major issue ,i recon who ever ends up next to the vein after the wrestling uses the needle

iv practise on al dente macaroni in a condom is traditional among some medics .much harder to do than the real thing
