Interesting results here- given the nature of this site, I thought at least one person would have gone for the smaller engined Freelander. Another consideration, as much as I love Defenders, after a hundred miles it does take about three days to get sensation back in your bum was thinking the Freelander would be a bit more comfortable.

Defender if it is to be a true workhorse, Freelander if it were to be used regularly for long journeys.

A fair point! I had to pick my bro-in-law up from the station yesterday and drive him for an hour along some of West Wales's windiest roads, and his considered verdict - from the point of view of someone with a knackered hip and a pair of crutches trying to crawl from the cab at the end of the journey - was, "F*ck me, I'd forgotten how bloody lumpy those b*stards can be!". And he's a confirmed Land Rover fan.

OK, now what [vehicle] would you choose in my situation- low budget (as ever!), mainly to be used for 'clean' jobs (transporting food products), some towing & offroad capability, and long distance journeys now & again. Needs to be hardtop, preferably commercial, good on fuel, and something that gives a good impression (ie glass in windows, starts on ignition, door doesn't drop a couple of inches when opened, door closes again

)

Actually, I would love a defender, now I've bought a decent set of tools.
