The poncho pattern I was looking at last night is knitted in "Sirdar Softspun Chunky".

Would this mean I could use any brand of 'chunky' or might they knit up differently?

Black Sheep has some excellent bargains in the Clearance section and a few are them are chunky, just not that flavour of chunky.

it's basically a wool/acrylic blend. but a fairly light one i'd think. you can be a buit flexable. any suggestions of what particular yarns you were looking at?

and when buying a substitute, buy by yardage, not weight, weights can differ signidicantly.

This:

and

My other (yes another!) concern is having no idea how a multi-coloured or tweedy yarn will knit up.

I wish they'd show little knitted up samples as well as the ball.

As it is for a scarf/poncho, rather than a fitted garment, I wouldn't think it would make much difference.

i agree with Toggle - buy the right length of yarn, rather than the right weight of yarn, when swopping to a differnnt one to the recommended yarn.

This should be stated in the description of each yarn, so should be easy to do.
